Okay, before I start, let me say I love my GFX100RF. It’s definitely my favourite camera and I’ll be posting a full review soon.
But’s it’s not without some facepalm moments where you have to ask yourself “What the hell was Fujifilm thinking?”
What would be the dilemma we refer to?
Well, Fujifilm did something amazing with the GFX100RF. They created a camera that you can use in both compact like the X100 series and in a longer form with the square hood. It’s a great idea and an almost perfect solution, that could so easily have been executed better.
The problem with the current approach is that in its short form, you can’t mount the filter. The irony is that this is the format where the lens is at most risk of being bumped or damaged, so whilst the lens offers some weather proofing protection, it also offers physical lens protection.
When you mount the filter, you need to unscrew the standard ring, and then mount a ring that gives you the ability to attach the both the filter and the square hood.
Great, of course Fujifilm thought of this and allowed you to add the lens cap to the longer ring used to attach the square hood? Nope, apparently they didn’t. Everyone at Fujifilm just thought you would remove filter ring every time. And for some obscure reason they made that ring slightly smaller so it doesn’t fit. What the? I cannot fathom that everyone at Fujifilm somehow missed this and that someone may want to use a filter without the longer square hood.
It’s a really surprising decision for a brand that prides itself on aesthetics. it could really have been addressed quite easily by making the exterior size of the filter attachment marginally larger, even if that required the hood to be so as well.
What it does it create a market for someone to make an aftermarket Fujifilm cap for the filter setup, because I’m not sure if Fujifilm will, but I hope they do because I don’t feel like a third party branded hood.
